•long read•intense intensityOkay, okay, stop blushing. You're already pink and I haven't even gotten to the good part yet. Yes, I see you leaning forward like I'm about to hand you the winning lottery numbers. Fine. Pour yourself another glass of wine because this story deserves at least two.
So you know how I've been going to that Tuesday night book club at the community center? The one where we pretend to discuss literature and really just drink too much and argue about whether the protagonist was justified in cheating on her husband? Right. Well, last month the group decided to move meetings to my condo because the center was doing some renovation, and Cheryl said, "Oh, my friend Lawrence has been wanting to join — is that okay?"
I said sure, not thinking much of it. Another body in the room, another opinion to argue with about symbolism. What I didn't expect was the man who walked through my door at six fifty-three on a Tuesday evening carrying a bottle of Pinot Noir and a smile that made me forget I was wearing my reading glasses pushed up on top of my head like some kind of old owl.
He was tall. Not towering, but tall enough that when he stepped into my kitchen to hand me the wine, I had to look up. Silver hair, neatly trimmed beard, and these hands — don't give me that look — his hands were the kind that looked like they knew what they were doing. Broad palms, long fingers, clean nails. I noticed that immediately. A man who takes care of his hands is a man who understands the value of attention to detail.
"You must be Darby," he said, and his voice had that low, warm rumble to it. Like a cello.
"And you must be Lawrence," I said back, taking the wine. Our fingers touched during the handoff. Just a brush. But I felt it. Don't roll your eyes at me — I felt it. A little spark, right at the base of my thumb. At my age, you don't ignore sparks. You collect them like precious coins because you never know when the next one is coming.
The book club meeting was fine. We argued about whether the narrator was reliable. Lawrence had actually read the book — which put him ahead of half the group — and he had opinions that were smart without being pretentious. I kept watching him over the rim of my glass. The way he listened when other people talked. The way he laughed at something Cheryl said, this genuine laugh that crinkled the corners of his eyes. And yes, I noticed the way he looked at me when he thought I wasn't paying attention.
He was watching me cut cheese. Can you believe that? I was at the kitchen island slicing brie and gouda, arranging them on that wooden board I got in Portugal, and I could feel his eyes on me. Not on my face. On my hands. On the way I held the knife. On the curve of my neck when I tilted my head to check the oven timer.
After the meeting wound down and everyone filtered out — Cheryl was the last because she always corners someone to talk about her grandson's soccer tournament — it was just me and Lawrence in my kitchen. He'd offered to help clean up, which I thought was polite, and I wasn't about to say no because my back was aching and the idea of someone else loading the dishwasher sounded like luxury.
We fell into this easy rhythm. He washed, I dried. Our elbows bumped a couple of times in my small kitchen, and each time he'd say "sorry" in that low voice and I'd say "no worries" and we'd both smile like teenagers who didn't know what we were doing.
Then he set down the dish towel and turned to face me fully. I was leaning against the kitchen island, wine glass in hand, and he was maybe two feet away. Close enough that I could smell him — sandalwood and something clean, like fresh laundry.
"Can I be honest with you?" he asked.
"I'd prefer it," I said.
He took a breath. "I didn't come tonight for the book club."
I raised an eyebrow. "Oh?"
"Cheryl's been telling me about you for months. About your laugh. About how you carry yourself. She said you were someone I needed to meet." He paused, and his eyes held mine without flinching. "She was right."
Now, you know me. I don't get flustered easily. I've been around long enough to know when a man is feeding me lines and when he's being genuine. This was genuine. I could see it in the way his jaw tightened slightly, like he was bracing for rejection.
"That's very flattering," I said carefully.
"I don't want to be flattering. I want to be direct." He took a step closer. "I want to lick your cunt, Darby. That's what I've been thinking about since the moment I walked through your door."
Your face right now — that's exactly the face I made. Except mine probably had more wine on it because I literally choked on my sip. I coughed, wiped my mouth with the back of my hand, and stared at him.
"You just — you said that out loud," I managed.
"I did." He didn't backpedal. Didn't apologize. Didn't qualify it with some nervous disclaimer. He just stood there, steady and sure, waiting for my response.
And here's the thing I didn't expect. My body responded before my brain caught up. I felt heat bloom between my legs like someone had turned on a switch. My nipples tightened against the fabric of my bra. My breath went shallow. All from one sentence. One direct, filthy, honest sentence from a man who looked me dead in the eyes when he said it.
I set my wine glass down on the counter. My hand was trembling slightly, and I didn't want him to see.
"You don't mess around, do you?" I said.
"I'm seventy years old. I don't have time to mess around."
I laughed. I couldn't help it. And that laugh — it broke something open between us. The tension that had been building all evening snapped into something electric. He moved first, closing the distance, and his hand came up to cup my face. His palm was warm against my cheek, and his thumb traced along my jawline with a slowness that made my whole body ache.
"I've been wanting to do this all night," he murmured, and then he kissed me.
God, the kiss. You'd think at our age, kisses would be tentative, careful, like two people afraid of breaking something. This wasn't that. This was a kiss with intent. His mouth was firm and sure, and when I opened for him, his tongue swept in with a confidence that made my knees wobble. I gripped the edge of the kitchen island behind me, and he pressed forward, his body solid against mine. I could feel him getting hard through his jeans — a thick, heavy pressure against my hip that made my pulse hammer.
His hands slid down to my waist, fingers spreading across the small of my back, pulling me tighter against him. I tangled my fingers in his silver hair and pulled him deeper into the kiss. He groaned against my mouth — this low, raw sound that went straight between my legs.
"Bedroom," I breathed against his lips.
He pulled back just enough to look at me. "You sure?"
"I'm sure. But I need you to know — I walk with a wiggle. It's not something I can control. If you're going to follow me down the hall, you're going to see it."
He grinned. "Darby, I'm counting on it."
So I led him down the hallway to my bedroom, and I didn't try to minimize the sway of my hips. Why would I? He'd been honest with me. I could be honest with my body. I felt his gaze on me like a physical touch, warm and appreciative, and it made me walk slower just to draw it out.
When we got to the bedroom, he turned me around gently and kissed me again. Slower this time. More deliberate. His fingers found the buttons of my blouse, and he undid them one by one, pressing his lips to each newly exposed inch of skin. My collarbone. The swell of my chest above my bra. The soft skin below my ear. Each kiss was unhurried, like he was memorizing the geography of me.
"You're beautiful," he said against my throat, and I didn't argue because the way he said it — low and rough and reverent — I believed him.
He unclasped my bra with steady hands. No fumbling. No awkwardness. Just a smooth, practiced motion that made me wonder how many women he'd undressed in his life and then made me stop wondering because it didn't matter. Right now, he was undressing me, and that was the only thing that counted.
My breasts were free, and he cupped them both, thumbs brushing over my nipples. I inhaled sharply at the contact. They were sensitive — more sensitive than they'd been in years, probably because it had been so long since anyone had touched them like this. He bent his head and took one nipple in his mouth, tongue swirling in slow circles while his hand worked the other breast, rolling and tugging gently.
I arched into him, fingers clutching his shoulders. "Lawrence," I gasped, and the sound of his name in my mouth seemed to spur him on. He switched to the other breast, sucking harder, and the pull of it sent a jolt of pleasure straight to my pussy. I could feel myself getting wet — really wet, soaking through my underwear, which hadn't happened to me in longer than I care to admit.
I reached for his belt, but he caught my hand and pressed it back to my side.
"Not yet," he said. "I told you what I wanted. Let me do it."
He knelt in front of me. Just sank right down onto his knees on my bedroom rug like it was the most natural thing in the world. He looked up at me with those steady eyes, and I could see the hunger in them — controlled but unmistakable. His hands went to the waistband of my pants, and he eased them down over my hips, taking my underwear with them in one smooth motion.
Cool air hit my skin. I was bare from the waist down, and he was still fully clothed, kneeling in front of me, and the imbalance of it — the vulnerability — was intoxicating rather than frightening. Because the way he looked at me wasn't leering. It was worship.
"Sit on the edge of the bed," he said.
I did. My legs fell open, and he moved between them, hands on my thighs, thumbs tracing the soft skin of my inner thighs in slow strokes that made my muscles jump.
"You have no idea how long I've thought about this," he said, and then he leaned in and licked me.
One long, slow, flat stroke from the bottom of my pussy to the top. I made a sound — I don't even know what to call it. A whimper, maybe. A gasp. Something raw and involuntary. He paused, letting me feel the warmth of his breath against my wet skin, and then he did it again. Slower this time. More pressure. His tongue was broad and wet and warm, and he spread me open with his thumbs so he could taste every fold.
I fell back onto my elbows, watching him. His eyes were closed, and there was this expression on his face — pure, focused pleasure, like he was savoring something exquisite. He wasn't rushing. He wasn't performing. He was genuinely enjoying this, and that realization made me even wetter.
His tongue found my clit, and he circled it slowly. Tight, deliberate circles that made my thighs tremble. I reached down and grabbed a fistful of his hair, and he responded by sucking gently, pulling my clit into his mouth and tonguing it with a rhythm that was building something deep in my belly.
"Fuck," I hissed. "Right there. Don't stop."
He didn't stop. He kept that exact rhythm, and his hands slid under my ass, tilting my hips up so he could get deeper. His tongue dipped inside me, fucking me in slow, wet strokes, and then moved back to my clit, and the alternation was driving me insane. I couldn't predict what he was going to do next, and every new sensation sent a spike of pleasure through my body.
I was close. I could feel it building — that tightening, that gathering wave. My breathing was ragged, and my fingers were tangled so tight in his hair that I was probably hurting him, but he didn't seem to care. He was lost in it, making low sounds against my skin that vibrated through me.
"Lawrence, I'm going to —"
"Do it," he murmured against me, and the vibration of his voice on my clit was the final push.
I came so hard my vision blurred. My whole body seized up, thighs clamping around his head, back arching off the bed, and I heard myself crying out — something incoherent, his name maybe, or just a sound that didn't have words attached to it. He kept his mouth on me through all of it, tongue working me gently as the waves rolled through, easing off only when the last shudder passed and I collapsed back onto the bed, breathing like I'd run a mile.
He pressed a soft kiss to my inner thigh and looked up at me. His chin was wet, his eyes were bright, and he had this expression of quiet satisfaction that was somehow the most arousing thing I'd seen all night.
"That," he said, "was worth the wait."
I laughed — that genuine, full-body laugh that I'm told is one of my better features — and reached down to pull him up toward me. He climbed onto the bed, and I kissed him, tasting myself on his lips, and reached for his belt again. This time he let me.
His cock was hard and thick in my hand, and he groaned when I wrapped my fingers around him. I stroked him slowly, feeling the weight of him, the silky skin over rigid heat. He was breathing hard now, his forehead pressed against mine, and there was something deeply satisfying about watching this composed, direct man come undone under my touch.
"I need you inside me," I said against his mouth. "Right now."
He didn't need to be told twice. He reached for his wallet — condom, of course, because we may be older but we're not stupid — and then he was pushing into me, slow and steady, and the fullness of it made me gasp. He filled me completely, and he paused once he was all the way in, letting me adjust, letting me feel every inch.
"Fuck, you feel good," he said, voice rough.
"Move," I told him, and he did.
He started slow, deep strokes that pressed against that spot inside me that made my toes curl. I wrapped my legs around his waist, pulling him deeper, and he picked up the pace. The bed was creaking — I'm sure my neighbors heard, and I didn't care even a little bit. He was grunting with each thrust, and I was making sounds I didn't know I could still make, and the whole room smelled like sex and wine and sandalwood.
He shifted his angle, and suddenly every thrust was grinding against my clit, and I felt another orgasm building. This one was different — deeper, more intense, like a tide instead of a wave.
"Come with me," I said, and I felt his rhythm falter, his breath catch.
"Darby —"
"I'm close. Just — yes, there, fuck —"
He took me apart with a rhythm that was both desperate and deliberate, each thrust a claim, a question, a demand I answered with my body. When my orgasm hit, it tore through me like a sob, my whole self clenching around him, my nails raking down his back, my teeth sinking into the muscle of his shoulder to muffle the scream I couldn’t hold back. He shattered right after — a raw, animal groan ripped from his chest, his release flooding me in hot pulses as his body shook against mine, wrecked and undone and utterly mine.
Afterward, he rolled to the side and pulled me against him, his arm draped over my waist, his lips pressed to my shoulder. I could feel his heart hammering against my back, and I matched my breathing to his until we both settled.
"So," he said after a long, comfortable silence. "Same time next Tuesday?"
I snorted. "You want to come back for book club?"
"I want to come back for everything else. I'll read the book if that's the price of admission."
I turned in his arms to face him. His hair was a mess, his shirt was wrinkled, and he had the most contented look on his face I've ever seen on a human being.
"The book is terrible," I warned him.
"I don't care."
And that, my blushing friend, is how I spent my Tuesday night. So the next time you see Lawrence at book club, you'll know why I keep volunteering to handle the cheese plate.
Now drink your wine and stop looking at me like that. I can see the gears turning in your head, and yes, Cheryl has his number.
