THREE SILVER RINGS
by RILAYAWRITERabout 2 hours ago
•long read•intense intensityThe velvet box was still open in Topanga's hand, three silver rings catching the amber light from the windows, and nobody had answered Riley's question. Maya was the first to move. She reached over and picked one up, turned it between her fingers, felt the weight of it. Simple. Clean. Heavy in a way that meant something. "They're not anything," Topanga said. "They're just you wear them and you remember." "Remember what?" Maya asked.
"That this happened. That we did this. That it wasn't a mistake or a one-time thing or a holiday weekend thing." Topanga paused. "Unless it was." Riley took a ring. She didn't ask any more questions. She just slid it onto her right hand, middle finger, and held her hand up to the light. The silver caught the glow and threw it back. "It wasn't," she said.
Maya put hers on. Same finger, same hand. She looked at Riley's hand and then at her own and then at Topanga, who was watching both of them with an expression that was trying very hard to be casual and failing. "You're not wearing yours," Maya said. "I was waiting to see if you'd want me to." "Put the fucking ring on, Topanga." Topanga smiled a real one, not the composed half-smile she used like armor, but the kind that crinkled the corners of her eyes and made her look ten years younger. She slid the last ring onto her finger and closed the box and set it on the coffee table next to the warm champagne and the untouched cards.
They sat there for a while, naked and sticky and pressed together on the couch, and the silence wasn't awkward. It was the kind of silence that comes after something that rearranges the furniture in your head. Maya's head was on Topanga's shoulder. Riley's hand was on Maya's thigh. The rings glinted on three right hands. "I need a shower," Riley said eventually. "I need food," Maya said. "I need to open another bottle of champagne," Topanga said. "And I need to ask you both something. "Maya lifted her head. "That sounded like it had weight." "It does." "Are we doing serious conversation naked? Because I feel like that's either the most honest way to do it or the most ridiculous." "Both," Topanga said. "That's why it's going to work."
She got up from the couch without any self-consciousness, which was new. Six days ago she'd been the one who needed wine and a card game to get her clothes off. Now she walked to the kitchen naked, opened the fridge, pulled out a second bottle of champagne, and popped it with a practiced thumb on the cork. She poured three fresh glasses and brought them back, and Maya noticed she walked differently now too, looser, her hips moving with an ease that hadn't been there before.
Topanga sat on the floor this time, her back against the couch between Maya's legs, and handed the glasses up. She held her own and didn't drink yet.
"How long?" she asked. "How long what?" Riley said. "How long have you two been together. Not as friends. As this." Maya and Riley looked at each other. The look lasted about three seconds and contained an entire conversation that Topanga watched happen without interrupting. "Two years," Maya said. "Off and on. Mostly on." "Mostly on," Riley confirmed. "And the things you do, the dares, the Gazette, the filming is all wrapped up in this?" "It started as one thing and became another," Maya said. "The dares were just dares at first. Then they became a reason to be naked together in places where we couldn't touch, and the not-touching became the thing that made us crazy, and then we'd get home and go blind on each other," Riley finished.
Topanga took a drink of champagne. "I want to know everything." "Everything's a lot," Maya said.
"I have another bottle and a three-day weekend." Topanga turned her head and looked up at Maya. "I want to know when you first touched her. I want to know what it felt like. I want to know what you do when it's just the two of you and there's no one watching and no camera and no dare. I want to know if you've done this before, the three of us, I mean. With someone else." "No," Riley said. "Never. We've talked about it." "With me specifically?" "Topanga," Maya said carefully, "we've been talking about you for a year."
The silence that followed was different from the earlier one. It was charged, electric, the kind of silence that happens right before a fuse catches. Topanga's hand tightened on her glass. "A year," she repeated. "It started as a joke. Riley said something about your legs in that black dress you wore to the gala, and I said something back, and then it wasn't a joke anymore." "What did you say?" Maya smiled. "I said I'd put my mouth on every inch of those legs before I got to anything else, and Riley said she'd hold you down while I did it." Topanga's breath caught. Maya saw it, the small hitch in her chest, the way her shoulders shifted.
"And you've been thinking about this for a year." "Planning," Riley corrected. "We've been planning. The champagne, the cards, the weekend, none of that was random. We invited you here because we wanted you. We've wanted you for a long time." Topanga set her glass down. She turned around on the floor so she was facing the couch, kneeling, looking up at both of them. Her eyes were dark and her lips were slightly parted and her breathing had changed. "You set me up," she said. "Yes Completely," Maya said. "The card game was rigged."
"I told you she was counting cards," Riley said to Maya. "I wasn't counting cards that first night. I was losing on purpose to get you naked," Topanga said. "I wanted to see if the way you looked at me meant what I thought it meant." Maya blinked. "You what?" "Did you think I didn't notice? The way you watched me at breakfast. The way your eyes went to my mouth when I drank my coffee. The way you always sat too close on the couch." Topanga's voice was steady but there was heat underneath it. "I'm fifty-one years old. I've been wanted before. I know what it looks like."
"Then why did you need us to spell it out?" Riley asked. "Because I needed to know it wasn't just looking. I needed to know you'd do something about it." She paused. "And because I wanted to see if you'd be brave enough." "We're brave," Maya said. "Prove it." Topanga reached for the cards on the counter and shuffled them with hands that didn't shake. "New game. Same rules as before. But this time, when I win a hand, you don't just take something off. You tell me something. Something you've never told anyone about what you do together. And when you win a hand, I'll do the same." "That's not strip blackjack," Riley said. "It's better."
Topanga dealt the first hand. "Trust me." They played on the floor, naked in a loose triangle, the cards between them and the champagne within reach. Maya won the first hand and Topanga removed nothing, she was already bare, but she leaned back on her hands and said, "Ask me something." "When did you first think about us?" Maya asked. "Specifically. The moment." Topanga didn't hesitate. "The rooftop dare. You were standing at the edge with the wind hitting you and your shirt was off and you looked at Riley like she was the only thing keeping you on the ground. And then I thought I want someone to look at me like that. And then immediately I thought no, I want them to look at me like that." Riley's hand found Maya's knee under the cards and squeezed.
Topanga won the next hand. "Riley. Take something off." "I'm already naked, Topanga." "Then put something on and take it off again. The rules are the rules." Riley stared at her, then laughed and got up and went to the bedroom. She came back wearing one of Maya's oversized t-shirts and nothing else, and she pulled it over her head in one motion and dropped it on the floor and sat back down. "Happy?" "Thrilled. Now tell me something. The first time you and Maya had sex where were you?" Riley's cheeks flushed. "Her studio apartment. The one with the broken radiator. It was freezing and we'd been filming dares all day and we were both wired and she locked the door and pushed me against the wall and I came so fast I was embarrassed."
"How fast?" "Like ninety seconds. Maybe less. She had her hand in my pants and her mouth on my neck and I just —" Riley made a small explosive gesture with her hands. "It was mortifying. She never lets me forget it." "I don't let you forget it because it was the hottest thing that ever happened to me," Maya said. Topanga won again. She looked at Maya. "Same question. The first time you went down on her." Maya took a long drink of champagne . "The next morning. Same apartment. I woke up before her and she was sleeping on her stomach and the sheet was down around her hips and I just started at her shoulders. Kissed every vertebra. Took twenty minutes to get to the small of her back. By the time I got to her ass she was awake and shaking." "And when you got between her legs?"
"I didn't rush. I'd been thinking about it for weeks. I wanted to know what she tasted like, what she sounded like, what she did with her hands." Maya's voice had dropped lower. "She grabbed the headboard and broke a nail and said my name like it was the only word she knew." Riley was very still. Her nipples were hard and her thighs were pressed together and Topanga was watching her with open, hungry attention. "One more hand," Topanga said. She dealt and they played and Maya won this time. "Your turn to ask."
Maya looked at Topanga. Really looked at her, kneeling on the floor with her ring glinting on her finger and her body flushed and her eyes steady. "What do you want? Not what you think you should want. Not what makes sense. The thing you actually want right now." Topanga's composure cracked. Not broke, cracked, like ice in spring, the structure still there but light coming through. "I want you to fuck me the way you fuck her. I want to know what it feels like to be the center of all that. I've been the responsible one for thirty years and I'm so tired of being careful and I want —"
She stopped. Her hand was shaking. "What?" Riley said softly. "I want both of you. At the same time. I want to not be able to tell whose hands are where. I want to lose count."
Maya set her cards down. She moved across the floor to Topanga and took her face in both hands and kissed her. Not gentle, not careful, the kind of kiss that has teeth in it, that says I'm going to take you apart. Topanga made a sound against her mouth that she'd been holding back for a year.
Riley was behind Topanga in seconds. Her hands slid around Topanga's ribs from behind, her mouth on the back of her neck, and Topanga gasped into Maya's kiss the same way she had on the couch earlier. Maya pulled back just enough to speak.
"On the couch. You're going to sit between us and we're going to take you apart slowly and you're going to tell us everything you feel." "I don't — I'm not good at —" "You're good at it," Riley said against her skin. "You just haven't had the right audience." They moved her to the couch. Topanga sat in the middle and Maya was on her left and Riley on her right and for a moment they just held her. Maya's hand on her thigh, Riley's arm around her shoulders, the three of them breathing together.
Then Maya's hand moved higher. She didn't go between Topanga's legs, she went to the inside of her thigh, the soft skin there, and traced slow circles that made Topanga's legs fall open on their own. Riley's hand came up to Topanga's breast, cupping it, her thumb dragging across the nipple with a patience that matched Maya's rhythm. "Tell us," Maya said. "I feel your fingers and I want them higher." Maya moved them an inch. "Now?" "More." Riley rolled Topanga's nipple between her fingers and Topanga's hips shifted. "What else?" Riley asked.
"I feel your hand on me and I want your mouth. I want to know if you're as good with your mouth as Maya said you were." Maya raised an eyebrow at Riley. "What did you say about my mouth?" "I said you were annoyingly talented," Riley said, and then she bent down and took Topanga's other nipple in her mouth and Topanga's hand flew to Riley's hair. Maya's fingers finally moved to where Topanga wanted them. She was wet again, genuinely, dripping wet, the kind of arousal that comes from being wanted out loud, from hearing people describe what they'd do to you, from a year of tension finally breaking open. Maya slid two fingers through the wetness, not inside, just along the surface, and Topanga's hips chased her hand.
"Inside," Topanga said. "Please — I need —" Maya pushed two fingers in and Topanga's whole body arched. Riley was still at her chest, switching from one breast to the other, and the combination of Maya's hand and Riley's mouth was making Topanga shake in a way that was very different from the controlled composure of the kitchen woman who'd walked in with champagne. "More" Topanga said. "Another one." Maya added a third finger and the stretch made Topanga cry out, not a muffled thing this time but a full, open sound that bounced off the walls. Maya fucked her slowly, too slowly, the same deliberate pace that Topanga had used with her tongue earlier. Payback.
"You're being cruel," Topanga said. "I'm being thorough," Maya said. "There's a difference." Riley laughed against Topanga's breast and the vibration of it made Topanga clench around Maya's fingers. Riley's hand slid down Topanga's stomach and found her clit and Topanga made a sound that was close to a sob. She was pinned between them again, full of Maya's fingers, Riley's fingers pressing in tight circles, Riley's mouth on her chest, and her hands were gripping the couch cushions like she'd fall off the earth if she let go. "I can't — it's too much — both of you —"
"It's supposed to be too much," Maya said. She curved her fingers up and pressed and Topanga's hips bucked hard. "That's the point." Riley increased the pressure on Topanga's clit and sucked her nipple at the same time and Topanga shattered. It was bigger than the first time, a full-body convulsion that started in her center and radiated outward, her thighs clamping around Maya's hand, her back arching, a sound coming out of her that was raw and unfiltered and nothing like the woman who counted cards and poured champagne with steady hands. She came in waves, each one smaller than the last, and Maya and Riley held her through every one of them.
When she was done, she was crying. Not dramatically, just tears running down her face, her breath still catching, her body still trembling. Maya kissed the tears and Riley held her tighter and nobody said anything for a long time. "I'm sorry," Topanga said finally. "Don't you dare apologize for that," Maya said. "It's been a long time since anyone made me feel anything that big." Riley kissed her shoulder. "That was the point."
They rearranged on the couch. Topanga ended up lying across both of them, her head in Maya's lap, her legs across Riley's thighs. Maya ran her fingers through Topanga's hair and Riley traced patterns on Topanga's ankle and the apartment was quiet except for the sound of three people breathing. "The cards are still on the floor," Topanga said. "Leave them." "The champagne is warm again." "We'll open a third bottle." "The sun is going down." "Good," Maya said. "We've got all night."
Topanga looked at the ring on her finger. She turned it slowly, catching the last of the light. "I have one more question." "Ask it," Riley said. "Next weekend. Same time. Same place." She paused. "Same people." Maya looked at Riley. Riley looked at Maya. The look lasted about two seconds this time and contained a much shorter conversation, the kind that only needs one word. "Yes," they said together. Topanga smiled the real one, the one that crinkled her eyes, and then she closed them and settled into Maya's lap and said, "I'm going to need more champagne. And better cards. And possibly a chiropractor."
"You're fifty-one," Maya said. "I'm fifty-one and I just got fucked by two thirty-year-old's on a couch. I'm not complaining. I'm planning." Riley reached for the third bottle. "I'll open it if you tell us one more thing." "What?" "The black dress. The one from the gala. Do you still have it?"
Topanga opened one eye. "Why?" "Because Maya has a promise to keep about your legs, and I have a promise to keep about holding you down, and I think we should do both of those things properly." Topanga closed her eye again. The smile was still there. "Closet. Behind the winter coats. Bring it to the bedroom." Maya's hand stilled in Topanga's hair. "Bedroom?"
"You didn't think we were done, did you?" Topanga said. "I've been thinking about this for a year. One afternoon isn't going to cover it." She opened both eyes and looked up at Maya with a gaze that was steady and dark and absolutely certain. "Get the dress. Get the champagne. Get on the bed. I'm going to show you exactly what careful looks like when it stops being careful." Maya looked at Riley. Riley was already standing, already heading for the bedroom, already pulling the closet door open. The black dress emerged from behind the winter coats like a secret that had been waiting.
Topanga stood up from the couch. She picked up the champagne, the cards, and the velvet box. She walked to the bedroom without looking back. Maya followed. In the morning, the cards would be scattered across the bedroom floor, the champagne would be empty, and the black dress would be on the lamp. But that was hours from now, and none of them were counting.

Topanga smiled a real one, not the composed half-smile she used like armor, but the kind that crinkled the corners of her eyes and made her look ten years younger.
